I started this headdress three years ago. Originally it was for the cover of @dat’s new album. She wanted something that represents the DNA in fluo color, we made a quick sketch and based on that I began to select materials, first with what I already have at home and then, look for specific things like the fluo opaque tape or the iridescent balls.
I felt like using wire. I did research on DNA, I looked at a lot of photos, I didn’t want to do a literal representation. I like that thing that comes from doing a lot of research and then letting it go. From vague ideas to concrete material, at that moment, there is an abyss. As if there were a translucent membrane that I have to go through willingly, it’s like a fear of not solving it, a premature uncertainty for a successful ending.
This exceeds the experience, the patience gained, the attitude and the awareness of the organic rhythm of things. I tell myself start with the first! Small steps, everything is important.
Days and days testing textures and making selections, on the Styrofoam head, then on my head, taking a distance to change the perspective. This is how this headdress came to be, which is versatile and dynamic. In the end it didn’t make it to the album cover because things happened.
The alien costume was made in part for the 2019 Womex Finland fair, I finished shaping it during the pandemic, I added the mask inspired by Oblina, a character from my childhood, I tried it on and filmed some performance videos, it achieved more visibility when it was worn and portrayed Argentine photographer Nora Lezano during a photo shoot for extraterrestrial artist Dat Garcia’s new album.
It was already 2021, Dat told me to bring extra suits just in case. When Nora saw this costume she didn’t resist putting it on and we also insisted a little to cheer her up. That is when Nora left her role as a photographer to play at being someone else and this beautiful photograph emerged for which I thank her eternally.

Ñanduti helmet (pharaona style) for Sofía Viola
Idea, Design and creation
ñandutí knitting, made with different types of threads, sequins, metals, and a bit of improvised embroidery.
While I was embroidering I was listening to the words of the book “Women who run with wolves” by Clarissa Pinkola says: “The she-wolf teaches us what we have to look for, the indestructible force of life, the bones. The wolf sings about the bones that she has collected. Singing means using the voice of the soul. It means telling the truth about one’s own power and need, infusing soul into what is ill or in need of recovery. And this is done by descending to the greatest depths of love and feeling until the desire for a relationship with the wild Self overflows to be able to speak with one’s own soul from this state of mind. That’s singing over the bones.”

I go in search of material, it is difficult to find one that meets all my wishes, the ideal, and in general, sellers want you to solve quickly. Buying fabric through the web is not my thing, I need to see them, touch them and ask questions, that was difficult in quarantine. But I solved it.
Rebeca, it was a pleasure to make this wardrobe, thank you
